Big G

Big G

Another blessing to complete the garden guardian, Big G. A family from the East Coast took me and my car in for a while, while I had some car issues and some much-needed family time back in WA over Christmas. I couldn't be more grateful for this little family from the nest, an intergenerational household all seeing the world from completely different perspectives yet leaning in and creating a safe little eco-system.

The large goanna had started as a small idea but grew quite rapidly. The day after I arrived, I had met the local goanna that roamed the backyard of this beautiful timber home that nestled among the trees crowded with a variety of birds, including a Carnaby Cockatoo named Speckles, he had the most beautiful pattern and is the most photographed cockatoo in the area, the locals say. He flew with the rest of his kind proudly but always knew to stop at the hidden timber home.

Other than the goanna and the cockatoos, other critters roamed this property. Possums stalked the area through the night keeping an eye on me to make sure I wasn't an intruder, or to see if I'd left food lying around. Snakes dazed and spooked on the warmer days. Rainbow Lorikeets flashed through the sky and screamed out to God knows who, but they definitely had a lot to talk about. Brush Turkeys perched in the pine waiting for their daily tucker and spiders created the Taj Mahal of webs but played a busy part in keeping the mosquitoes at bay. This little sanctuary made anything big or small feel welcome and safe, including myself.

The owner of the home had a keen eye for art and loved the colours of the Kimberley. The home was filled with splashes of ochre and the vibrant blues of the tropical waters, the walls were lined with novels, SO many novels. It really was the most beautiful setting. The colour we decided on was ochre, a reminder of the past travels to the North for the owner of the home.

We did have some hiccups along the way as this was the first outdoor painting on tin that I had done and I hadn't picked the right paint, so there was quite a lot of frustration, but the outcome was still lovely. And everyone was more than happy with how Big G turned out.

I will forever be grateful for the little Nest in the small coastal town, and I do hope to visit it again soon. And super grateful for this beautiful family for allowing me to join the eco-system with no hesitation, I hope to return the favour one day.
